Why You Need Lifestyle Coaching & What Is It Anyway?

I graduated college at 21-years-old in fitness and health promotion. Though at the time my focus was primarily personal training and physical wellness, I of course had formal education in the lifestyle coaching areas and a wealth of knowledge on mindset and behavior change. The more I worked with clients the more I found my focus switching from the physical aspects of training to the mental aspects of coaching.

I was discovering very quickly how much my clients benefitted more from the coaching side of things. Soon they were finding goals and aspirations outside of their physical health and their life was transforming. I fell in love with lifestyle coaching. Since I’ve stopped personal training it’s the coaching side of things I miss the most and I’ve decided I want to dive back into it.

What is lifestyle coaching?

Lifestyle coaching professionals work with individuals to help them improve their overall lifestyle, well-being and happiness. Essentially, a lifestyle coach is all about helping you target your goals, create your life’s vision and break away from things that no longer serve you.

Lifestyle coaching includes but is not limited to:

  1. Goal Setting
  2. Identify obstacles
  3. Outline strengths & weaknesses
  4. Overcome obstacles & weaknesses
  5. Practical Strategies For Change
  6. Relieve Lifestyle Stressors
  7. Set Boundaries
  8. Reflection
  9. Maintenance
  10. Create Long-Lasting Change

What does working with a lifestyle coach look like?

Moving forward, I want to go into what working with a lifestyle coach may look like for you. Like I’ve said previously, lifestyle coaching is done on an individual basis however this is a general outline of what a session may look like. Lifestyle coaching starts with identifying where in your life is not serving you.

You may not be completely aware of these areas, so you may go into a session thinking of focusing on one thing a leave with a plan to work on another entirely. The process is entirely client lead so it’s important to remember your coach is there to listen to you and gently guide you, NOT make decisions for you.

A coaching session will start with some reflection and catch up. If it’s a first session it will encompass a multitude of questions all about your goals, lifestyle, emotions on a daily basis, stress sleep etc. Your follow up sessions will do a mini version of this to check in and reflect on how things have been going. A lifestyle coach is going to give you “homework” they should also have resources and sites/sources to back up what they are giving you.

Lifestyle coaching should help you progress and it should also be timed in the sense that you are working with your lifestyle coach for a set amount of time and then you have the results you’d like and you can go on your way unless you would like to continue on with new goals and aspirations. Of course, the goal of a coach is to keep clients, but if you don’t have specifically timed goals what’s the point? The whole idea is to help people on their journey, NOT to become their journey.

What a lifestyle coach is not!

  1. A Therapist
  2. A Counsellor
  3. A Friend

A lifestyle coach is a coach threw and threw. Boundaries are important and it’s important that you keep your expectations in the parameters of your coaches scope of practice and vise versa. It is a very personal relationship between an individual and their coach, however it’s very important that the boundaries of that relationship are not blurred or compromised.
